But let me explain!

If any company can make reading about technical topics interesting its O'Reilly & ElephantAssociates Publishing. They are the premier information source for leading-edge computer technologies. The company's books, conferences, and web sites bring together a nice mix for technology innovators. Back in 1985 the company gave their books away, for FREE, to promote their consulting business that was doing poorly. The Shareware and FreeWare  software concept  was very popular back then. The books where considered more like an 80 page pamphlet than anything else. But they where Excellent. They where called Nutshell Handbooks®, insinuating people where just trying to get down to basics in just a couple of pages. It had nothing to do with their audiences mental state of mind. Eventually the books helped the consulting business. Their Business developed because they did it for fun. That’s the golden rule in life do what you like and enjoy doing it.

I remember meeting the company for the first time at Alan Meckler’s first Internet World event during the early 1990’s. Only a hand full of companies exhibited at the show. Not many people understood what the internet was or even cared for that matter. Their was just a handful of computer geeks and hackers at the event. O'Reilly & Associates Publishing was one of the companies exhibiting.

They are certainly one of the first companies that pioneered the internet. Before the original Mosaic Web browser was released they realized the potential of the web They created one  the first web portals for fun. It was called Global Network Navigator GNN. This was before AOL, MSN and any other company that comes to mind including Prodigy. This was even before Al Gores time.

I had a home page listing on GNN. Gina Smith, ABC GINA, was also listed on GNN. BTW incase your wondering America online eventually purchased GNN. America Online was a closed service and not part of the internet until after that purchase.  AOl didn’t want any part of the internet at the time they wanted to keep a closed online community.

Another milestone for the company was

The Internet catalog from Ed Krol's The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog.

This book was the who’s who of internet book’s. Anything and everything you wanted to know pertaining to the internet was in Ed’s book

They also produced a series of internet talk radio tapes called Geek of the week.

The company currently published more than 300 titles. They also employ over 300 people, and have offices in the US, Japan, France, Germany, the UK, Taiwan, and the People's Republic of China.

Tim O’Reilly is an excellent speaker. If you ever have a chance I recommend attending one of their conferences. For more information Please visit TCF.NET’S

O'Reilly's Pocket References and Pocket Guides guide series is relatively new. The books are comprehensive, inexpensive, compact, and easy to use .

The "Google Pocket Guide" begins with essential Googling information: what Google is and what it isn't, and a summary of helpful Google services. The bulk of the book focuses on what users need most--fine-tuning their searches with power-user tips and tricks so they can zero in on the information they need and understanding the results of their searches.
